There are people who have ENGLISH DEGREES who grew up in English speaking countries that have lost english competitions in Korea and japan because they have better english than the judges. I had a friend return to canada after trying to get a teaching job in korea as an english teacher (she is korean by birth but grew up in Canada) and she failed the english fluency test because her pronunciation was perfect. She has a masters in english from Cambridge.

If anything, it is culturally insensitive _not_ to use the Japanese pronunciation for English loan words. It suggests you think there is something inherently weird or off-putting about Japanese pronunciation. Would you be insulted if a Japanese person in your city asked in English to got to a karate class, pronouncing it "ka-RA-dee" as one does in English, thinking that because she is Japanese, she should pronounce it "ka-ra-te"? That's insane, right? It's just as insane for you to think Japanese people will be upset in the reversed case for you saying, like, ko-hi- instead of coffee.

the first time i went to japan i had been studying japanese for sometime but of course, not being fluent, I didn't know everything. I was in a country-ish area and doing well until I wanted ice in my water. It was summer, aboout 101F outside and we had just been hiking. AND I had no cell service for google. I just kept using the word for rock and called it a "cold rock." An old man at a nearby table got me eventually and helped me out XD

about the using the japanese pronunciation for english words, my company deals with a Japanese company. while we converse in mostly english, my superior found out that if you imitate their pronunciation, it is easier for them to understand what you are saying.

I'd love to visit these cafes, ones I find interesting. I'd definitely learn how to communicate or how it'll be done.
